ctivities to articulate feelings
Within a study situation, introduce circle-games to promote whatever needs to be learnt. (A circle-game is a game performed either sitting, lying or standing with others in a circle.) So, if the skill of listening needs learning, take turns around a circle of friends and or family to say a word which describes how you feel, then the person on the right-hand side of the one who has spoken repeats that word and then adds his own feeling-word which describes his emotion. (Examples of a few feeling words are: happy, sad, angry, excited and flirty.) Continue in this way around the circle until every one has a turn. This situation, while being fun, lets your child articulate his feelings and develop listening skills. (This game is so easy to do in the safety of the home! Bear in mind that learning how to express emotion appropriately and hear what others say, will stand your child in good stead when she eventually is in a work situation.)
Reward your child after studying. Teach delayed gratification for a few minutes daily. For instance, if your child wants to see his friends, say, âYou can see them after youâve come home from school on Friday, provided that your homework is done.â Emotional literacy expands by appropriate waiting before satisfying a wish.
Home
At home, if your child wants to watch television but the after-dinner mess is there, say, âClear up the mess before watching TV.â Outside the home, perhaps when your child is a teenager with a job, it will do him good being emotionally literate at work.
