Stone didnât turn away from the woman, one he now counted as far more dangerous than he had moments ago. The way sheâd gone for his neck, with a grip strong enough to put pressure on his ability to breathe? Impressive. Not an action heâd have believed sheâd take. Now he knew better.
âA talk? Only thing youâll be doing is following orders until weâre safe, then weâll part ways.â Her voice remained calm.
âIs that right?â His hands itched to do something, anything to be rid of the tension. His temper bubbled, and he took a step away from the racks. âYou wonât always be in charge. Flex your temporary muscles all you want, we both know it wonât do any good. Sooner or later weâll find a Marine of higher rank, and youâll have to answer for your actions.â The same ones he would have taken had the roles been reversed. Not information heâd share with Lawbook anytime soon.
âI donât doubt my command is short term. When the Gunny is back to full strength, heâll be in charge unless we run into an officer.â Her voice cold.
Gunny.
The older man had a core of steel, but he was no fool. Heâd seen the way the man lost his color, the blood at his lips and nose. If he made it another hour, Stone would be surprised. âIâm human, remember? Means I have rights. Ones you canât strip from me.â
âIâm aware.â The two words bland, emotionless. She knew. The way she spoke, the lack of emotion, oh, she was aware Gunny was dying.
âI havenât signed with the military.â He watched her, searching for a sign of what was going on behind her eyes. âAnd I donât have any plans to change. Happy enough with my life, or was until these visitors arrived.â
âI know.â
âWhich means you donât have the right to tell me what to do.â
âRight now I do, you gave me the right by agreeing to follow orders.â Her lips twitched into a smile which vanished a moment later. âOr are you saying you lied? Never intended to keep your word?â
He growled. If there was one thing he held to, it was his oath. A merc who couldnât be trusted to finish the assignment or a trader who didnât follow through with their load, couldnât be trusted. If people believed youâd take their money and run, you didnât get the chance at the bigger packages or working for the man with the deepest pockets. His word was all he had. âNo, I didnât lie. Not something Iâm in the habit of doing.â
âThen thereâs no problem. I want you to work with the others, take inventory. If you know where a ready-made one is kept, itâll cut into the work we have ahead of us. I want to be out of here in the hour. Weâve no idea how much air and heat those kids have, and they canât stay hidden for much longer, not with the way those things are acting.â
