CHAPTER_17

_Scott_

I found something.

It was an UltSyn candidate video of eighteen-year-old blonde girl. After all this time, I found a solid lead.

After all this time, I found something substantial to go on.

I heard Sonia come back into our hotel room. It wasn’t as nice as our Paris apartment, but it worked. Her footsteps vibrated along the floor as I quickly closed the file. My heart was racing as if I wouldn’t be able to hit that little “X” in time. Stupid, since the screen wasn’t even facing her direction.

Sonia walked over to the desk, setting down sodas she got from the vending machine down the hall. How’s it going? she asked once her hands were free. Find anything?

“Um.” I looked down at the screen that now just displayed the desktop background. “No. Not really.”

That sucks. She grabbed a soda again and moved over to sit on the edge of the bed.

“Yeah.” The word stretched out as I got out of the chair. I walked around to the front of the desk, and leaned against it before I went on. “We should head back to London.”

What? She dropped the drink so fast that I thought it was going to spill on the bed.

“We’ve been here for days, and I haven’t found anything to warrant a trip anywhere else. The whole point of this road trip was to draw UltSyn’s attention away from London. But, I can’t continue to keep us safe if we are running only a couple steps ahead of them.”

There is something in Denmark. I feel it.

“There’s no logic behind that. And, we don’t have any more time to kill with this road trip around Europe.”

No, you. You don’t have time. I have all the time in the world. Always you, and your search. Always about Victoria. Her signs were quick, and they were blurring together as they tasked my brain to split them up again.

“Don’t.” I grabbed her hands before she went on. “Don’t mention her name like that. Please.” I assume I would have gotten a rude “like what” if I hadn’t for all intents and purposes silenced her. But I didn’t want to hear, or even see her name at all, if it was just going to be paired to my shortcomings in finding my sister. I didn’t want anyone making me feel that unless it was going to lead me to her like that video could.

Sonia ripped her hands out of mine, and stormed off to a different corner of the room. She angrily started gathering her clothes, throwing our bags on the bed and haphazardly jamming everything inside.

I hadn’t meant right this second. I watched, wondering if the outburst of emotion would die out, but Sonia was dead set on sticking to it. And if I didn’t want us to break, we’d both have to bend. So, I went back to the desk and started packing before she ended up sitting next to her packed things glaring at me.

The trip back to London was the longest yet.
