Chapter Twenty-One

I feel like I have worked a full week in the past three days, I’m absolutely exhausted. Partly because of not getting enough sleep at the weekend, plus the number of meetings and projects I have had to set up for, sit through and type up minutes for. The only saving grace has been my lunches with Dionne.

Myles has been a less moody-boss this week, but not as friendly as over the weekend. I can understand that we need to have a bit more professionalism and this seems like a happy medium. The only problem is, I’m still having the sex dreams. I’ll wake up in the middle of the night, pulse racing and dripping in sweat. That’s the other reason I’m so tired.

I pack up my things and knock on Myles’ door. “I’m heading home now, if that’s okay? I’m no use to anyone.”

He gives me a cheeky little smile. “No worries, I think I’m going to head home myself.”

“That’s not like you. I thought you had a bed made up in here.” He laughs. I give him a little finger wave and leave, closing the door behind me. Picking up my coat and bag I walk down the corridor towards the lift, trying not to make any eye contact with any of the other people on the floor so I can get out of the building without delay.

The lift pings to say it has reached the ground floor and the doors open. I step out and give Fran, the security guy, a little wave while totally blanking Cruella. As I beep through the staff barriers the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and a prickling sensation runs down my spine. It’s then I see him, propping himself up next to the door, his face contorted.

There’s no way of getting out without walking straight past him. But even as my mind races, thinking of ways to escape unnoticed, his eyes land on mine and narrow at me. He pushes himself off the wall and comes towards me.

Getting too close for comfort, I see his blood shot eyes and the grimace. He leans in at the same time as grabbing me by the elbow. I stop in my tracks. If I leave the building no one will know what is happening.

“Well, well, Megan,” he spits out. “Landed on your feet here didn’t you! We need to talk.”

“I don’t have anything to say to you Darren.”

“Well I have plenty to say to you. You and your meddling friends have ruined my life. My girl has left me, my friends won’t speak to me, I have been barred from my local. And to top it all off, I’ve been pulled in by the police because of you. Again!” His grip gets tighter and tighter around my arm as he tries to pull me out of the door.

“Stop it. You’re hurting me.”

“You’re coming with me. And you can clear up everything with the cops.”

“Oh no she isn’t!” A familiar voice from behind stops Darren in his tracks.
