“Just the stud I was looking for.”

Weeks later, I was walking home from Target on a Friday afternoon, phone-to-computer cord finally in hand. Cutting across church’s unusually empty parking lot, I was being shouted at by some guy in a pickup full of lumber.

Then I realized: Timmy!

As we hugged, he explained he was home from his band’s tour.

“You’re a natural handyman,” he said, remembering I’d helped him build a ropes course at camp. “Whatever construction project Jack’s starting up, this wood was technically on Grandma Esther’s land, so I say we do some useful mischief.”

With tithes raining down, Jack had begun clearing land for an enormous new sanctuary, bragging about doing so before obtaining permits.

“I’m, like, not allowed to be here,” I said.

“Amigo,” Timmy said, winking, “me neither.”
