Delilah stood before a large passage in a rough wall of solid rock. It was framed by intricate, engraved masonry carved deep with symbols she could not read. She wasnât sure what hellish creature had flown through it at the end of her battle, but it was the only passage out of this terrible city she could see. Above her, a trail of blue green whisps flowed through it.
âThese must be the souls Larry told me to follow,â she spoke softly, then looked at her sword. She turned the mighty weapon over in her hand, then raised it above her head, toward the souls. Just like they had during the battle, the souls flowed into her pummel, like moths to a flame.
She turned her gaze forward again, and the orange glow emanating from it brought to Delilahâs mind images of fire. Even though she now felt stronger, there still lingered fear. Fear of what might lay on the path ahead of her and doubt as to whether she could survive it. As powerful as she had become, could this sword make her fireproof?
She closed her eyes and took a breath, imagining Momo in the hands of the Devil, then squeezed the handle of her sword, like she was squeezing the fear stirring within her. Squeezing it down until it was too small to feel.
The passage that seemed to grow wider with each step. Ahead of her, it turned enough to block her view of what lay beyond, but she could hear enough to make her sick with horror.
Behind the crackling of fire and the bubbling of what Delilah could only guess must be lava, there was another sound. At first it sounded like something entirely inhuman. The screeching moans that clawed their way through the air in unnatural tones. They rose and fell in unrhythmic waves that became clearer to Delilah as she rounded the corner. There, she was met with the sight and stench of what she already knew, deep down, had been waiting for her.
She was surrounded by lakes of fire that stretched to her left and right as far as her eyes could see. Through the burning pools, veins of brimstone wound and twisted in a web of varying pathways that cut through its bubbling surface. Inside the boiling pools of molten rock stood countless human bodies, all burning and wailing out in agony. Above the damned, towering over them like living mountains, stood giants whose eyes cried with rivers of molten tears. The rivers ran down their burnt bodies. Deposits of brimstone grew in jagged formations from beneath their charred skin. Each of them had four long arms, with which they would casually pluck a person from the fire and feast. As much as she hoped it would, Delilahâs presence had not gone unnoticed.
The giant closest to her took one step toward her. Its massive stone leg cut through the fiery lake with ease. From this simple motion, there formed a wave that engulfed hundreds of burning bodies.
