âIâm bored.â
Orustie got up off the bench and pushed past Thripis into the aisle. The Lunerian couldnât quite swing her long purple legs out of his way in time.
âOuch! Why donât you watch where youâre going?â
Orustie looked at the holographic time index on his wrist chronometer and sighed.
âHow much more of this is there gonna be? Iâve got to get ready for scoopball practice after school.â
âBig deal,â Thripis shot back. âI played scoopball for a few seasons. Itâs way overhyped.â
Orustie considered her remarks for a moment, and then scrunched his dark eyebrows in confusion.
âWhat do you mean you played scoopball? Was it some kind of coed thing?â
Thripisâs amaranthine eyes went wide. She looked mortified, as if she just inadvertently divulged some coveted secret. Orustie wanted to pursue the matter further, but Thripisâs demeanor suggested he drop it immediately.
As he returned to his seat, Orustie took off his lettermanâs jacket in an exaggerated display of machismo. He flexed his muscles without a hint of modesty, pumping his arms for her benefit. Thripis couldnât help but notice the chiseled features of his body, although she feigned disinterest. Orustie then pressed his face against the window, breathing heavily on it until a sizeable grey cloud of moisture covered the bottom half of the pane. He took his finger and pretended to etch something in the rapidly vanishing canvas. Curious, Thripis peered over his shoulder to see what he inscribed. Orustie purposely moved his body to block her view. After several futile attempts, Thripis finally caught on and punched him in the shoulder.
âOuch! Iâm beginning to think you really are a violent person.â
Orustie winced and mockingly kneaded his shoulder. Thripis wasnât buying it.
âGive it up, you big faker.â
âAre all Lunerians as vicious as you?â
âOnly when provoked. What did you write on the window?â
âNothing. We canât touch anything, remember?â
âYet, weâre sitting here on seat cushions that donât exist. Come on, let me see what you wrote.â
âItâs nothing, honest,â Orustie smirked.
âIf itâs nothing, then you should have no problem letting me see it.â
Thripis tried to get a closer look at the window, but Orustie successfully held her at bay.
âI just want to see it for a second,â she insisted.
Again, Orustie stubbornly refused. The corner of his mouth turned up in a wry smile as Thripis grabbed his arms. She had no hope of subduing the much larger man. Nevertheless, she gave it her best shot, giggling all the while. Orustie joined her, laughing heartily as they both jockeyed for position. Desperate, Thripis lunged to the left. When Orustie fell for it, she twisted her body around to the right. The gambit would have paid off, had Orustie not seen similar maneuvers play out before on the scoopball field. Instinct took over, and he clotheslined her back onto the bench. Thripis landed with a thud, her eyes squinting shut. When she failed to stir, Orustie moved in closer.
âAre you all right?â
There was no response. Worried, Orustie nudged her gently.
âIâm sorry. I didnât mean to hurt you.â
Unable to keep the ruse going any longer, Thripis erupted in a fit of laughter.
