Chapter Fourteen

Randi replaced the mike in its black plastic holder. She was glad Matthew found a ride with the Groovy Grannies. Relief flooded through her as she realized he might have ridden with Notorious Liz, known for stripping a man with her eyes the instant she met him. Liz wouldn’t be good company for a man like Matthew, and not just because he worked for God. She didn’t want him in Liz’s company.

The seat next to her seemed emptier than ever. She didn’t miss him, did she? That couldn’t be possible. No, only calmness flowed through her now that he wasn’t in the truck

But she did miss the warm, rich scent of masculinity, the soft strumming of his guitar. His fragrance lingered, and she inhaled the woody scent. She hated to admit it, even to herself, but maybe she was beginning to like having this man around.

She tugged a snapshot of Emma from the visor in front of her. Randi missed Emma’s quirky sense of humor and silly jokes. Maybe Randi should keep Emma and let Mom live the life she wanted. Sighing, Randi put the picture back. Emma’s crooked smile touched Randi’s heart. Maybe she didn’t want to drive a truck forever. She’d been foolish to let one man destroy more than her dream wedding. She’d let him have power over the rest of her life, and he wasn’t even around.

The sign for Burgers and Beyond stood high above the exit ramp as it flashed orange and red, bright even in the dusky light. Randi pulled off the interstate and maneuvered her rig into the establishment’s side parking lot, built for truckers and RVs. The security lights flickered to life. One after the other reflected off a few battered farm pickup trucks.

Not quite sure how long it would be until the Groovy Grannies dropped him by the roadside, she decided to wait inside for Matthew. She retrieved the shirt she had thrown onto the floorboards earlier. No need to freeze while waiting for him. She picked up her log book as well. She had to record this rest, even if it would be small.

She’d worked double shifts the last three weeks. As soon as she and Matthew finished each day, she headed home and changed into the cream and navy Speedy Delivery uniform. With a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in hand, she’d race out the door and wouldn’t return until almost midnight. It was a crazy schedule, but the money bought Emma new clothes.

Emma had come home from school upset. Girls taunted her, calling her “witch” because of the color of her eyes. Not content to bedevil her with just that, they continued with her clothes and nicknamed her “Orphan Witch.”

Randi couldn’t change Emma’s eyes and her damaged feelings, but she could help her dress like the others. She understood only too well what Emma felt like, and she intended to do what she could to build Emma’s self-esteem. Even if it meant driving when she shouldn’t.
