Back at Vivien’s Ridge, four shadows crept along the tree line. A dark figure moved forward, the moonlight shining off a pair of dark eyes. Its coat of thick grey and white fur bristled as it sniffed frantically along the edge of the forest. Picking up a familiar scent, it growled approvingly, low and rumbling. Two of the others moved from the darkness of the trees. As a group, they followed the trail along the cliff’s edge that Cinder had walked earlier that night. With their moist noses to the ground, they walked in single file. Finding their way to the fallen tree, they scurried around, rubbing themselves excitedly against the trunk. All three of the beasts rose onto their back legs, placing their front paws on the fallen tree. They sniffed desperately and excitedly at the pile of clothes, boots, and blanket. A howl from their fourth companion, still hidden in the shadows, sent them all scurrying on all fours back into the protection of the forest.

Cinder the Powerful, Cinder the Lycan Queen, Cinder the Free, ran with joy and peace through shrubs, low hanging tree branches. Her large fur-covered feet stomped in the mud and crunched dry leaves and twigs. Long orange hair and fur danced and ruffled in the breeze. Moonlight penetrating through gaps in the canopy of the dark forest dappled her body, sending shivers of transformative energy and exhilaration to her extremities. She slowed, feeling a twinge at the base of her spine. With the sudden feeling that she wasn’t alone, she stood tall on her hind legs, sniffing the air. Puffs of warm misty air rushed from between her sharp canine-like teeth. Her ears turned from side to side as her moist nose twitched. Picking up on a familiar scent, she stopped between the trunks of two tall and straight pines, the scented needles brushing against her hairy shoulders. Ahead, a grassy embankment declined gradually to a small clearing. The long-forgotten remnants of a timber fence ran off into the darkness to her right. Grey posts crumbled, rotting, and overgrown with thick tufts of grass and twisting blackberry tendrils. In the shadows on the far side of the clearing, branches rustled and swayed with the back-and-forth movement of unseen things. Cinder lowered her head and looked from side to side, peering into the dark. Even with her Lycan eyes, she could only see outlines of the dark objects beyond the clearing, but instinctively, she knew what they were. She walked down into the clearing and stood in the moonlight. The air grew cooler and thick with the scent of damp, rich soil.

‘Come into the light,’ she commanded in a deep, raspy voice. Four sets of teeth and pairs of large eyes appeared at the edge of the clearing, glowing in the silver light. Cinder clenched her oversized fists.

‘Show yourself,’ she said, followed by a growl that rose from deep in her chest.

Emerging slowly from the tree line, a large hairy creature walked tentatively forward on its long sinewy hind legs.
