Chapter 14
Liam
Halfway to Lukeâs office I realized what Iâd done and turned around. Iâd left Holly and Rosemary alone in that house after Owen had put his hands on her. Clouded with anger, I had stormed out to find Luke and get that asshole officially fired, possibly arrested, and out of Hollyâs life in every way I could think of. Never had I done something this stupid. But I also had never felt anger quite like this before and I didnât want her to see me this way. I canât believe I had left them there unprotected.
What if he came back? His behavior was like nothing Iâd seen from him before.
I flipped a U-turn and headed back to make sure they were okay. I passed Jared in his Porsche when I turned onto Rosemary Street, the flashy prick. There was another asshole I had my eye on. Something about him had rubbed me the wrong way from day one.
Pulling into the driveway, I recognized Dahliaâs minivan parked at the curb, and no sign of Owenâs truck. I breathed a sigh of relief. Maybe I hadnât entirely fucked up and they were okay.
âLiam, sweetheart!â Dahliaâs beaming face greeted me as I walked up the path to the front porch. âWeâre headed to Hollowayâs for burgers. Join us? Iâm driving.â
âBurgers for breakfast?â
Holly shrugged and sent me a smile. âWe had a craving,â she said.
âI already ate, but thank you. Are you okay? I canât believe I left you two there like that. I am so sorry.â
âWeâre fine, honey. I have my knitting needles.â Rosemary patted her handbag. âIf he came back, Iâd have been ready for him.â
Dahlia looked confused. âWhat? What are you talking about?â
Holly huffed a laugh. âIâll tell you over burgers, Mom. And itâs okay, Liam. I mean, I canât believe he did what he did but Iâm fine. I think he might have been drunk or on something. He was never rough with me before. Like, he turned out to be an idiot and a cheater, but he was never a violent asshole, you know?â
I nodded. âHe wonât bother you again. Iâll make sure of it.â
âHonestly, Iâm not worried about him. His face after you threw his ass through the door spoke volumes. He wonât be coming anywhere near me.â
I grabbed her hand. âCome with me.â
âOh! All right, Iâm coming.â She gestured for Dahlia and Rosemary to wait for her as I pulled her into the garage for some privacy.
âMe and you, Hollyââ My voice was a desperate growl. He could have seriously hurt her and I couldnât stand that I hadnât been here. I tipped my head back in frustration, unsure of what to say now that Iâd brought her in here. Her nearness made my senses spin and the fact that I could have lost her drove me crazy.
âHey,â she whispered and ran her hands up my chest to cup my cheeks in her palms. She searched my eyes. âIâm okay, shh. Itâs okay, heâs gone. Itâs over now.
