Edwin Moses: Early Heart Rate Pioneer

* * *

Here’s another example of using a heart rate monitor to determine the givens and variables in training. This is a good real-life example of effort-based training. Edwin Moses, arguably the world’s greatest all-time 400-meter hurdler, was an engineering student at Morehouse College in Atlanta. He took his interest in objectivity and numbers and adapted his workouts to heart rate measurements as well as anyone we’ve known.

During the fall season, Moses used his heart rate monitor to force him to do the kind of training that is the weakness of almost every sprinter: endurance and stamina training. Specifically, he worked on tempo runs for anaerobic threshold training on the Piedmont Park grass and hills. He performed cross-country-style, continuous workouts with his heart rate in his AT zone. During the track season in the spring and summer, he switched his monitoring to the recovery intervals between his speed work on the track. He never started speed or power repeats or sprints over the hurdles until his heart rate was fully recovered below 60 percent.

Moses lowered the world record several times, won two Olympic gold medals, and once had a streak of 122 straight victories in an event that is one of the hardest in track and field. You have to love those engineers and their heart rate monitors.
