Chapter fourteen

Garret

Charles’s pack flowed around me, closing off the view of my soulmate as she walked away with her newly found cousin. Lynn would explain all that had happened since Lila and Jess disappeared. She’d help Jess adjust to the pack life and accept her role as the alpha’s heir. And Jess would thrive … as long as she could come to an understanding with her father.

And I’d go back to being a bounty hunter.

My wolf growled his discontent at leaving Jess behind. While I agreed, there was nothing I could do to change it. Not yet, anyway. I needed to find out who put a hit on my mate and end that threat before I did anything else.

I drew in several deep breaths and turned toward the pack’s lodge where I suspected Charles would be. He should’ve met us at the gate and fought to protect his daughter. What could possibly be more important than her life? I hoped I never found out because I was certain I wouldn’t like the answer. My instinct to protect Jess would drive me to do something stupid. Like attack her father, who was also the section’s alpha.

I just needed to settle our payment with Charles and get the hell out of Silver Ridge so I could find the asshole who wanted my mate dead. My mate, I thought bitterly. In my dreams.

Noah, my beta, met me in front of the lodge with a troubled look on his normally cheerful face.

I stopped at the edge of the lawn sprawling out before the lodge. “How’s Levi?”

“He’ll make it,” Noah replied, “but he’ll be down for a while. They scored both his lungs and broke several ribs along with his leg.”

“Damn.”

Noah’s gaze met mine but only for a moment. “They knew to target Levi first to disrupt the pack. They took out Andrew before Levi even made it to the truck. They were too well informed, Garret.”

I’d suspected as much, but it still hurt to hear it confirmed. Whoever paid the feline shifters would feel my vengeance for killing one of my pack. They would die a slow and painful death.

“What do you want to do for Andrew?” Noah asked before I could formalize my revenge plans.

Mention of the friend we’d lost only fueled my anger. I stomped it down with effort.

“His family is here,” I replied. “They should make that decision.”

Most of my crew originated from Charles’s pack. Everyone except Noah and his mate, Mickey, had family here. Noah and Mickey were the only ones in my pack who weren’t single. Most of the people drawn to me didn’t want emotional attachments. Our job wasn’t safe or easy. Having someone at home who could be used as leverage against us wasn’t ideal.

Which was another reason why my pack wasn’t large, just big enough for us to get the job done. Not like the two hundred and something people living here in Silver Ridge.

Noah lifted his chin toward the lodge. “You want me to come with you?”

I glanced in the same direction.
