“Is this going to be a regular thing?” Cyrus asks with cheeks covered in chocolate glaze.

“What? Me picking you up from school?”

“You picking me up from school and coming to Tim Hortons.”

“Ah. Then no. Sorry bud.”

His face falls.

“I reserve the right to mix things up,” I add with a smirk. “Sometimes we might go to Harvey’s. Or ice cream. Or Pizza Pizza.”

Cyrus flashes me a sugary, toothy grin. I should probably instill better snacking habits in the kid. But I suspect he gets enough of that at home.

He takes another bite of his donut and talks with a full mouth.

“I can’t believe Mom’s okay with this.”

“Actually… she doesn’t know, per se.”

"What does purr say mean?"

"Don't worry about it," I wave my hand. "Just don't go blabbing to her about our little excursions. What she doesn't know won't hurt her."

I really don’t want to disrespect Shannon’s wishes, but she’s being unreasonable.

Cyrus nods, his expression serious. "So should I tell her I took the bus?"

"No. I don't want you to lie. But don't offer up the information either. Understand, little man?"

"I think so," he says nodding. "Purr say."

"Good. Now, I wanted to run something by you. How much do you love your school?"

He levels me with a hard stare. "Nobody loves school."

"Right. But in terms of maybe having to go to a different school. Would you miss Simcoe Elementary?"

"No way."

"Okay." I take a sip from my water bottle and think carefully how to present this idea to Cyrus in a way he'd be interested.

"So, a couple of the guys on the team—the old ones—they've got kids. And they were telling me about this school called Bayview Heights Academy. It's... kind of bougie. The guys were telling me it's got all the bells and whistles. Brand new facilities, huge sports complex, latest tech and gear. I saw some pictures online and it looks legit. I know you don't care much for sports, but they've got a lot of advanced academic programs too. Robotics, coding, 3D printing, all that jazz. I bet you'd like that stuff.

"Robotics sounds fun."

"I mean, there's math and English and Social Studies, don't get me wrong. But they've got some cool after-school programs too - cooking, chess club, drama."

Cyrus perks up at this. "Chess club?"

"Yeah. So if you went there, your mom could pick you up after work since you'd be busy with activities until 5 or 6. No more long bus ride home."

"That'd be awesome!" Cyrus says, nodding enthusiastically.

"I know, right? There is one catch though - you'd have to wear a uniform."

Cyrus scrunches his nose. "Even worse than the bus ride."

We both laugh.

"No way, uniforms aren't so bad!" I say. "Could be kinda cool, actually. Like Hogwarts."

Cyrus grins again, his eyes lighting up. "Maybe. I guess I wouldn't mind a uniform."

"Atta boy," I say, ruffling his hair. “But let me talk to your mom about it first, okay? I need to butter her up.”

I have no idea how to do that, exactly, but I’m hoping something comes to mind soon.
