FAITH
Hope came into our dorm room looking like she had walked through a hurricane.
“Damn!” I exclaimed. “What the hell happened to you?”
“What?” she asked, like she did not already know her appearance was crazy.
I waved her off. “Never mind. Please hurry up and take a shower so we can get going. We can’t be late.”
“You can go ahead in front of me.”
“No, I can’t and you know it. Tonight is our responsibility and we have to be on point with our shit.”
“I’m surprised you’re still so much into freak night,” Hope said.
I was lacing up my black leather boots and stopped to glance up at her from my bed. “Why are you surprised?”
She stared at me, and then sighed. “No reason.” She shrugged. “You seem a little preoccupied lately and I thought the entire Alpha Phi Fuckem thing might have taken a back seat in your life.”
I finished with my boots and stood up to put on my sweater.
“Hope, I’ll admit that as we approach graduation, things have become more complex in my life. I’m sure the same is true for you.” She shrugged again. “We are about to embark on another stretch of our lives. Going out here; becoming career women; settling down with the men of our dreams.”
She raised an eyebrow. “Oh, have you met the man of your dreams, Faith?”
I hesitated, then answered, “No, I don’t think so, but you never know. I may have already met him and you may have already met yours.”
Hope snickered. “I definitely haven’t met mine. But who’s tickling your fancy these days, Sis?”
“No one in particular.”
I could not tell if Hope knew that I was lying. It was almost as if she sensed something, which was not uncommon when it came to us. I was of the belief that she had been off somewhere fucking all afternoon but I did not care; especially if she was still doing that asshole Raheem. I wondered if she had heard something about Kevin and me, but who would have said something? No one really knew anything. We had been so careful.
“Are you going to wash your ass or what?” I asked her. “It’s smelling kind of fishy up in here.”
“Stop worrying about my coochie, tramp.”
We both laughed as Hope grabbed her shower cap and headed into the bathroom to shower.
