While she waited for her court date, the next six weeks passed in a blur. August in Florida was riddled with thunderstorms and oppressive humidity that punched you in the face at ten oâclock in the morning, limiting her regular beach walks with Arlo to the early mornings. The rest of the day Katie holed up at home and kept to herself, coming to grips with Yuliâs revelations. It was strange how the idea of magic at first seemed outlandish, but with the passage of time, she moved to a place of gradual acceptance. Now understanding the flashes sheâd received were actual events, Katie fed this information to Davina, encouraging her attorney to hire a private investigator to search for a safe deposit box and property records for a penthouse condo with an ocean view.
Katie stayed in her bedroom suite when Jeff was home, eating what she wanted, when she wanted, and spent many evenings relaxing poolside with Arlo. She read books on intuition and manifestation. She listened to podcasts and obsessively binged the Netflix phenomenon, Life after Death with Tyler Henry, feeling a kinship with the famous medium who was also adept at seeing events of the past. Her curiosity had no bounds and kept her occupied racing down magical rabbit holes.
The kids popped by for visits, and on more than one occasion, sheâd been compelled to clear her search history. They would really think Mama was losing it if they saw her deep dive into the Wikipedia pages on supernatural powers, retrocognition, and her newest fascination with the Salem witch trials.
Katie pulled away from everyone as she alternated between the agony of loss and the temptation of hope while she processed the end of her marriage. It had to happen, but that didnât mean it didnât hurt like hell. When youâre engrossed in the Monday morning armchair quarterback analysis of your life, it was easy to see the pitfalls that, in retrospect, could have been easily avoided. Some days, she beat herself up for being too trusting and took to her bed with a tube of cookie dough. Other days, she worked through simple yoga poses on the beach, letting the wind whip her hair and the ocean heal her soul.
For the first time in her life, she only had herself to take care of, an unsettling feeling so foreign it took her weeks to recognize it. Looking in the mirror at a woman she felt she hardly knew, she burst into tears. Feeling bold, Katie apologized to herself. âI am sorry. You deserved better. From now on, I will take better care of you.â Arlo was her only constant. His warm body snuggled up next to hers gave her solace and comfort. He followed her closely from room to room and listened as she broke plans with Frankie and asked for space. Even Frankie couldnât argue against her desire for self-care.
At the end of September, she was finally feeling up to visitors again and reached out to Frankie.
