Chapter 11

Wulf was having a hard time concentrating after learning that Haven wasn’t the only one with a special gift. He thought shapeshifting into a wolf was pretty cool, but it seems the humans put him to shame. Wait, if they had powerful abilities, were they even still considered human? But what else would they be? Wulf groaned – his brain hurt.

“Okay, Metheselah, speak.”

Wulf looked up to find Haven standing over Amos where he was seated, arms crossed over her chest, eyebrows raised almost in challenge. She looked particularly fetching in a cropped t-shirt and worn denim shorts that hugged her arse lovingly. Her unique grey hair was pulled back in a messy bun, much the same way as Quill’s, and had an almost blue-green look to it in the shade of the large tree they were under. Wulf shook his head, wanting nothing more than to learn the story behind her hair because everything about his new mate seemed mystical and rare and he wanted to learn everything there was to know about her. A kick to his shin had him snapping his mouth closed and frowning at the offender. Lucy pointed at him and wiped her chin. He scowled at her, mouthing the words fuck off because he was not drooling, damnit!

“Amos? You asked to come with us and I allowed it. Now, I actually like you but if you’re going to continue to make large and cryptic statements about the universe and not explain them, I’m going to have to mojo you to speak the truth. You want that?” Haven’s voice was stern, but she still looked relaxed.

Amos laughed, the sound rusty. “My dear, I believe getting ‘mojo’d’ by you would be an honour.”

“Stop being charming and talk,” Haven said, a small smile playing around her lips.

The twinkle left his eyes as Amos looked around at the dozen or so people assembled close by and then the even larger number of humans and shifters further away but clearly listening in. He sighed, “Seeing so many shifters and humans together living in harmony is a sight for sore eyes. I never thought I would get the chance to see it again.”

“You said you were around before the HUSH wars started – that you remember what the world was like before them,” Wulf prompted. He was as interested in the information as everyone else was.

“I was,” Amos confirmed. “I am nearing three hundred and fifty years old. I was in my forties when the first of the fights broke out. They were smaller battles and rather petty – the shifters flexing their muscles if you will.”

“The shifters?” Quill was quick to ask. “Are you saying it was the shifters who started the wars?”

Wulf leaned forward, keen to hear the answer. Although not many records survived the wars, it was known wide and far that humans were the instigators in the HUSH battles. It was their seeming innate need for war and violence, for prejudice and persecution that had had caused them to start discriminating against the shifters.
