CHAPTER SEVEN

David wouldn’t admit it to anyone else, but he worried himself the whole way home that something had gone wrong. That he would get there and find the cabin on fire, or Evelyn dead, or the place swarming with monsters or marauders. The problem was that it was possible, even likely, given their current environment. So it was a deep, deep relief to get home and find it undisturbed. He thought he could faintly hear light conversation, but it stopped immediately as he moved across the floorboards and the creaked with his weight.

That was a good feature of the place, honestly.

He got to the door and opened it up. “It’s David, Evie!” he called.

“Thank goodness, come on down,” Evelyn replied cheerily.

He moved downstairs and found that the basement looked different. Mainly it was a lot neater and more organized. There was a little niche of space to the right of the stairs, created by the stairs themselves, and he saw several boxes and other random items pushed up there, looking like Evelyn had shoved them there to get them out of the way. The corner to the left of the fireplace now had a desk and a chair in it, the desktop scattered with paperback novels, some papers, a random collection of pencils and other writing implements, and there was an electric lamp even. The other corner had the dresser he’d seen earlier, and farther up that wall was a square table with two chairs and a large, solid crate around it.

Their food supplies was stacked on it, as well as a few jugs of water. Finally, there was another desk with a blanket folded neatly and covering the top, as well as a pillow and another blanket, folded even smaller resting at the opposite end of the pillow. He looked at it for a moment, then glanced at Evelyn.

“That’s our, uh, infirmary, such as it is,” she said.

“Oh,” he replied, getting it now. That was why the blanket had been folded so severely, so it wouldn’t block the drawers where, no doubt, their medical supplies were stored.

Their sleeping quarters, such as they were, still remained in the center of the room, a big nest of blankets and pillows and clothing that had only been marginally more organized. Sitting on it was the rep woman he’d seen earlier.

“Do you like it?” Evelyn asked.

“Yes, Evelyn. It’s fantastic,” he replied.

She smiled and he saw she was blushing a little. “I’m glad you like it,” she said, then her eyes drifted down to the rep woman and she looked a little embarrassed. “Oh! Um, yes. April, this is David. David, this is April,” she said. “She’s awake now.”

“I can see that. How are you feeling?” he replied as he walked over to the table and set his backpack down on it.

“So much better,” she replied. “Thank you so, so much. You both saved my life. Like, legitimately, I would have died there.”

“I’m glad I could help. How are your wounds?” he asked.

“They’re okay.
