The soldier nearest to Will pushed him down on his face and crouched over top of him. The soldier placed his knee on the back of Will’s neck before proceeding to pat him down. One thought vaulted to the front of Will’s mind, even more pressing than the prospect of being disarmed and left for dead by the soldiers: the thought of the herd of dead that followed just a hundred yards behind him. Before he could think about saying anything, the man frisking him, shouted out, “Gun, we got a gun!” the soldier yelled excitedly.

Will let out an involuntary grunt as the man’s knee ground deeper into the back of his neck, stones from the blacktop digging painfully into his cheek. The soldier’s hand worked its way to the grip of the pistol poking out from his waistband. He could tell, even from his limited vantage, beneath the knee of the one, that the rest of the soldiers instantly tensed with weapons trained on him for a kill shot. As the gun was jerked out of his waistband, the soldier slid it along the ground, scraping and bouncing on the blacktop towards the rest of his squad before finishing the pat-down. One of the other soldiers picked up the revolver, opened the cylinder, and dumped the bullets from it. The bullets tinkled and bounced on the ground, almost musically before the soldier swept his foot across, sending them towards the sewer drain near the curb. He then threw the handgun like a baseball over the wall Will had been running beside just moments before. Will’s heart sunk into his stomach.

“You guys got a good supply of ammo?” Will grunted out from the ground with the knee still pressed onto his neck.

The soldier in charge looked at him, eyes squinting suspiciously before answering.

“Enough. Certainly more than you, why?” He finished his sentence with a smug, wry grin.

“Just making sure you got enough for that,” Will said pointing at the corner of the building near the retaining wall. The soldier looked up just as the first few undead came staggering around the corner, instantly recognizing a fresh meal standing in front of them.

For a moment, all that you could hear was the sound of a couple hundred shuffling feet, and the moaning of the dead, then the sound of a machine gun roared through the air, splitting the relative silence. First one, then a handful of the dead appeared, followed by the main body of the herd came around the corner. The soldier atop Will shifted off of him into a firing stance as all of the soldiers began firing their weapons into the approaching mass of undead.
