Nineteen

Kiran thought we could use a little escape, so he reserved us a small cabin in Utah for the weekend, just three hours from Vegas. We also got permission from the kids to let us bring Claire along so we can take her fishing, giving them a break as well.

“I’m still kind of surprised that you know how to fish,” I say from the passenger seat as we drive up the mountain to Duck Creek Village. “You don’t seem the type.”

He smiles. “Why is that? I’ve told you that my family used to go camping with Seth’s family when we were kids.”

“I know. But I guess I never pictured you fishing.”

“Is fishing hard, Papa?” Claire asks from the back seat.

“It’s not hard. It just takes patience, that’s all.”

Why do I have a feeling I’m not going to be so great at fishing?

“So you’ve never been?” Kiran asks me.

“Yeah, I’ve been, but not since I was a little older than Claire. I barely remember it.”

“It’s very relaxing. I think you’ll like it.”

The trees become thicker as we climb the mountain on this October day, and I’m blown away by the yellows and oranges of the aspens. “Oh my gosh. The colors are gorgeous, aren’t they, Claire?”

“Uh huh.”

“Vegas is great, but sometimes I wish we had actual seasons with changing leaves.” I’m already feeling more relaxed the closer we get to our destination, and I don’t even have a fishing pole in my hand.

Twenty minutes later, we turn into the village that’s home to a few restaurants, a hardware store, and a couple of realties and gift shops. We drive through the village and make our way up a dirt road that leads to the cabin where we’ll be staying.

“It’s so cute up here. Have you ever come before?” I ask.

“No, but one of my patients has a place here and tells me how much he loves it. He comes up a couple weekends a month until it gets snowy.”

When we pull up in front of the cabin Kiran reserved for us, Claire and our dog Trixie are anxious to get out of the car. Claire especially hates having to sit in a car seat for this long. Kiran and I step out of the SUV and he lets Trixie out while I unfasten Claire from her seat. Trixie immediately finds a place to pee and Kiran gets our luggage from the back.

The air is crisp and smells of pine cones and burning fireplaces, and that front porch is begging for me to sit out here with a blanket and a hot cup of coffee. “Mmm!” I lower Claire to the ground and inhale deeply. “It smells so good out here.”

A tire swing hangs from one of the trees on the property and Claire makes a beeline for it. “Look, Nana! What’s this tire doing here?”

“It’s a swing.”

She scrunches her nose and studies it. “It is?”

“You’ve never seen one?”

She shakes her head. “Do you sit on top of it, or inside it?”

“Whichever way you want, but I think I’d feel better if you sat inside it.
