CHAPTER TWELVE
A rocket launcher?
Rocks and debris tumbled. Cooperâs ears rang. He covered Hadley, careful not to hurt her, until he was sure everything had settled. But he couldnât wait until the dust had cleared. They had to get out of here.
Had the assassin seen their escape?
âHadley, are you okay?â In reply, words formed on her lips, but he couldnât hear them.
She tried to push up so he let her, then grabbed her hand.
âRun!â He wasnât sure if Hadley heard him, but she ran with him, understanding his actions.
He led her deeper into thick woods, around rocky outcroppings and evergreens. Cooper didnât risk stopping or looking back. Now they were truly on the run as they had never been.
He wanted to punch something. To kick himself, but he couldnât stop to take the time. Instead, he let the twigs, needles and branches that continually slapped him in the face punish him. Heâd take it like a man. He deserved it, but he tried to shield Hadley from any thorns or branches as they ran.
Theyâd lingered too long in one place.
Cooper had scouted the area to within at least a square mile of the berm to see if the man after her had closed in on them by tracking them through the night. That would be the only way he could have covered that much ground.
âGive me the pack,â he said through gasps.
âWhy?â
âJust do it, but donât stop moving.â Hadley let the pack slide off as she whipped past a tree.
Cooper urged her forward through the thick ferns and tree trunks. They had lost their lead.
Now. To get it back.
He continued jogging, pushing through the thick foliage as fast as possible, while he dug in the backpack. There. He yanked out the tracker.
âWhat are you doing?â Hadley glanced over her shoulder and tripped.
Cooper caught her, held her up and urged her forward. âLosing our tail. Wait here.â
He ran in the opposite direction and then came back to her and they continued on. âI left it over there. Maybe that will lead him away from us.â
âBut I thoughtââ
Yeah, heâd been an idiot to think he could somehow snag that assassin and make him talk. âChange of plans.â
Add to that, he had the sick feeling that the man would continue to find them with or without that tracker. In fact, Cooper could almost wish for the cover of darkness at this moment. That would be an advantage to him. They had no choice but to make every effort to lose the assassin now and for good. Cooper had been arrogant, thinking he could draw the man to them and get the upper hand.
His overconfidence had almost gotten them killed.
Hadley stopped and bent over her thighs, gasping for breath. âWhat was that, Coop?â
âA rocket launcher.â
âAre you kidding me? I rank rocket launcher status?â
âEvidently.â Who was Hadleyâs father? Who was Hadley that someone would go to this much trouble to make sure she was killed? âBut we need to keep going. We have to gain our lead back.
