Chapter Eleven
KIRBYâS PULSE SKYROCKETED as he clock-watched, knowing that he was going to have to pull some tricky maneuvers to slip out of the office before midnight in order to get to Sunshineâs sundown class. He could feel his heart racing, along with a crazy need to breathe into a paper bag to avoid passing out from hyperventilating. Jesus, when did he become such a pussy, scared of his damned boss like a cowering little mouse at the sight of a towering cat? And wasnât that it, frankly, that his bully boss thwapped him around with his fat paw and extended claws and battered his little mouse self around with a perverse sense of joy? When did his spine turn to mush?
He weighed his options as the clock neared quarter to seven: be honest and tell his chief of staff and boss he had to leave early for a prior commitment, or just slip out and hope no one missed him. In keeping with his current modus operandi, he opted for the cowardâs choice: he quietly exited the office, surreptitiously glancing behind him the entire way out of the building until heâd cleared the block. He practically expected theyâd send the Capitol police after him for his transgression. Imagine â leaving work in the evening like normal people! The nerve!
Of course, waiting that long to leave meant he had nothing to change into for class; he was going to have to hope for the best in his suit pants and button down. Heâd just remove the tie, roll up the sleeves. And heâd have to take off the wing-tip shoes. Surely others had practiced yoga in something less user-friendly. In a normal world, were he to leave work at a reasonable hour, heâd be grabbing something to eat right now. Unfortunately, that meant his stomach was going to be growling all through class. He just hoped it was only his stomach that would be raging at him, and not his telephone full of sound and fury from the senator.
He intentionally waited until about thirty seconds till class to enter. He wanted â no, needed â to be hidden in the back, away from real yogi-types who would cringe if they had to see him in action. And hopefully to avoid Sunshine coming around touching him again like sheâd done this morning. That would be seriously contraindicated due to his unforgiving suit pants.
Thankfully the lights were already dimmed by the time he took his place in the far back corner. The woman on the mat closest to him looked at him like he was nuts for wearing his work clothes. He was going to pretend he was just really dedicated to the cause.
As Sunshine guided her class through sun salutations and downward dog, Kirby hoped he might warm up just a little bit, maybe not feel like an aged oak tree unable to bend to the wind. But no, he could barely hold his down dog pose, made even harder with his suit pants restricting his movement.
