Chapter Five
The beach where Nathan took Jake for a walk was beautiful. The only way to reach it was by walking across a field, which led to a sandy slope down to a hidden cove.
“This is wonderful,” said Jake, as they cantered down the slope onto the beach. Waves lapped at the sand just feet from where they stood. To their right was a steep rock face dotted with small caves, and to the left a stretch of golden sand leading to a rocky outcrop about eight feet high.
“We need to climb over that,” said Nathan, nodding toward the natural wall, “then there’s a two-mile stretch of sand leading to another cove and a fishing village with a great pub.”
“Sounds good to me,” said Jake, although he was a bit nervous about climbing over the rocks. He didn’t want Nathan to see him struggle, or worse, slip and fall in an ungainly heap.
Neither of them had mentioned what had happened between them in the cottage, but there was a new intimacy between them now. Several times, as they walked across the field, their hands brushed, and occasionally Nathan would grab hold of Jake’s little finger for a few seconds. Now, as they walked along the sand toward the rock wall, Nathan slid an arm around Jake’s shoulders and kissed him on top of the head.
“I’m sorry about Alice. Try not to let her upset you. She’s had her problems over the years.”
“What kind of problems?” asked Jake. “If that’s not too personal.”
Nathan stopped and gazed out at the choppy sea, his arm still draped around Jake’s shoulders. He was silent for a moment, perhaps deciding what he was willing to share.
“Alice and I only really became close when I was around six and she was ten. We had different mothers, you see. Alice was the result of a fling my dad had in his early twenties, before he married my mother. Alice used to come and stay with us one weekend a month, but the age difference and the strangeness of the situation meant we didn’t immediately bond. But after my mum died, she was very sweet to me. She really stepped up to the role of big sister. I still owe her for that.
“Anyway, her life took a major downturn when she was twenty-two and her boyfriend died. She and Tony were living together at the time and she was totally devastated to lose him. I was devastated too. He was a good friend.”
Nathan began walking again, but slowly, as if to give himself time to finish the story before they had to climb over the rocks to the next part of the beach.
“She did actually get married when she was thirty, but even all those years later, she was still cut up by Tony’s death, and her marriage only lasted a couple of years. She tried again when she was thirty-five, but that marriage didn’t work out either. That’s when she came to live with me and started helping with the logistical side of the business.
