Chapter 7

Odin

Jesus Christ. She’s like a viper. Just when I start to relax, she’s coiled ready to strike.

I’m not sure whether to be impressed or annoyed as I clamber down the ladder, jumping the last few rungs to the floor.

But just what is her plan right now?

“Gracie, you are being a very bad girl. You’re not fucking getting out.”

I break into a run for the doorway of the library. I don’t know which way she’s gone, but I don’t need to, because a second later I hear her.

“Devora, it’s me, Gracie. I know you probably think I’m dead but I’m not.” Her voice is clear and nearby, coming from the foyer. “When you get this message you need to send help. I’m being held against my will, I’m not sure exactly where but it’s some sort of castle or manor house. The last intersection I remember is—”

Shit.

Shit shit shit.

I’m around the corner in an instant as she continues to give details about the house, things that she knows. My name, for fuck’s sake, and Gretchen’s. Doesn’t she realize how much danger she’s putting herself in?

“Gracie, hang up. Right now,” I bark as I skid onto the marble of the foyer.

She glances up and draws back as she sees me stomping her way, but she doesn’t put the cell phone down. She must have noticed it in the silver bowl, left there so that I can take a break from the endless calls and needs of my clients. I’m a man of habits, and this one just bit me in the ass.

“Hurry, Devora. I don’t know how long I might still have—”

I grab the phone out of her hands and fling it against the wall, exploding it into pieces, but the damage is already done. I have to now work on the assumption that the Bulgarian fucks that called for the hit gone wrong know she’s alive.

And know that I didn’t finish the fucking job.

“Fuck. You don’t know what you’ve done.” I run my hand down my face, trying to control my anger.

I meet her eyes and see tears welling, and almost crumple under the weight of the situation. No matter what she does, I’m responsible.

I let out a long breath. “This is my fault. I should have been more careful.”

“You can’t hold me here.”

“Who were you talking to? It’s important.”

She shakes her head. “I won’t betray my friend. I won’t put her in danger. Do what you like to me, I’m not telling you a thing.”

“She is in fucking danger. And that’s my fault. Who is she? Another employee of the Noviks? If I know who she is, I’ll help her.”

“What, like you’ve helped me? What are you going to do, kidnap her? Put us both in your cellar? Tie us both up so that you have two sex slaves in your dungeon instead of one?”

Her words cut deeper than any knife wound I’ve ever taken.

I turn away, trying to think.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean that.” She touches my shoulder and I snap back, catching the fear in her eyes.
