Chapter 7
Odin
Jesus Christ. Sheâs like a viper. Just when I start to relax, sheâs coiled ready to strike.
Iâm not sure whether to be impressed or annoyed as I clamber down the ladder, jumping the last few rungs to the floor.
But just what is her plan right now?
âGracie, you are being a very bad girl. Youâre not fucking getting out.â
I break into a run for the doorway of the library. I donât know which way sheâs gone, but I donât need to, because a second later I hear her.
âDevora, itâs me, Gracie. I know you probably think Iâm dead but Iâm not.â Her voice is clear and nearby, coming from the foyer. âWhen you get this message you need to send help. Iâm being held against my will, Iâm not sure exactly where but itâs some sort of castle or manor house. The last intersection I remember isââ
Shit.
Shit shit shit.
Iâm around the corner in an instant as she continues to give details about the house, things that she knows. My name, for fuckâs sake, and Gretchenâs. Doesnât she realize how much danger sheâs putting herself in?
âGracie, hang up. Right now,â I bark as I skid onto the marble of the foyer.
She glances up and draws back as she sees me stomping her way, but she doesnât put the cell phone down. She must have noticed it in the silver bowl, left there so that I can take a break from the endless calls and needs of my clients. Iâm a man of habits, and this one just bit me in the ass.
âHurry, Devora. I donât know how long I might still haveââ
I grab the phone out of her hands and fling it against the wall, exploding it into pieces, but the damage is already done. I have to now work on the assumption that the Bulgarian fucks that called for the hit gone wrong know sheâs alive.
And know that I didnât finish the fucking job.
âFuck. You donât know what youâve done.â I run my hand down my face, trying to control my anger.
I meet her eyes and see tears welling, and almost crumple under the weight of the situation. No matter what she does, Iâm responsible.
I let out a long breath. âThis is my fault. I should have been more careful.â
âYou canât hold me here.â
âWho were you talking to? Itâs important.â
She shakes her head. âI wonât betray my friend. I wonât put her in danger. Do what you like to me, Iâm not telling you a thing.â
âShe is in fucking danger. And thatâs my fault. Who is she? Another employee of the Noviks? If I know who she is, Iâll help her.â
âWhat, like youâve helped me? What are you going to do, kidnap her? Put us both in your cellar? Tie us both up so that you have two sex slaves in your dungeon instead of one?â
Her words cut deeper than any knife wound Iâve ever taken.
I turn away, trying to think.
âSorry, I didnât mean that.â She touches my shoulder and I snap back, catching the fear in her eyes.
