Were there commonalities across the class?

How did the writers feel sharing their stories?

Were the listeners able to remember the stories?

Could the listeners visualize the favorite places?

How might people feel sharing their stories with an interviewer they don’t know?

How important is it to devote full attention to the storyteller?

When the students spend ten minutes in each class on writing practice, sharing the writing with each other, this regular habit helps them increase their skill and confidence as writers. Students also may improve their writing by beginning each day at home with a journal entry that remains a private reflection. These practices increase fluidity and encourage both observation and reflection. To delve more deeply into writing practice, students may want to consult Goldberg’s (2010) Writing Down the Bones, a book of practical, and sometimes humorous, ideas and exercises for developing writing skills.

Writing, telling, and listening to stories also widens the class’s narrative research community and compassion for one another. Clandinin, Huber, Steeves, and Li (2011) view narrative inquiry not just as a research method but also, by sharing stories, as a way participants and researchers reflect on their lives, perhaps prompting future changes.
