An Episcopal First

In her now famous “Ain’t I a Woman?” speech delivered in 1851 at the Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio, Sojourner Truth declared, “If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back, and get it right side up again!” On February 11, 1989, before over eight thousand people and sixty-plus bishops, it seemed that one “skinny, nappy-haired black woman” had indeed turned the church on its ear—and perhaps on the course to be set “right side up again!” To be sure, the path to that day signaled that something revolutionary was happening in the church. The question is did Barbara know it? And if she did, when? This chapter tells the story of the journey to that February day.
