The town of Secota (or Secotan), as depicted in Thomas Harriot’s A briefe and true report of the new found land of Virginia (Frankfurt, 1590). Theodor de Bry’s engraving of the village of Secota was not accurate; there would have been no need for a straight-edged road through the community, for example, and the native peoples of eastern North America did not practice the monoculture common among the English. But the image nonetheless conveyed a distinct impression of the potential abundance of the region and the ways that its people already demonstrated signs of being civilized.

Unlike many sixteenth-century books, which used illustrations in a slapdash fashion and often repeated images, the books produced by Wechel used visual images to tell a specific story. The reader encountered Harriot’s text first, then the engraved version of the illustrations by White of the Carolina Algonquians and their world.
