Dorais was doing much of the coaching on his own now, after Higgins stepped down to focus on his medical practice. He was getting some help on the line from Spokane native Charles Adams, a former standout at the University of Pennsylvania. For the first time under Dorais’ leadership, Gonzaga won all three of their road games. On October 11, they edged Washington State in Pullman, 14–12. Stockton completed nine straight passes, two of them for touchdowns (including a 50-yard toss to Flaherty), and kicked the crucial extra points. A 14–0 shutout of Multnomah came next, thanks to another standout performance by Stockton. He completed seven passes for 168 yards, tossed a touchdown, caught another, rushed for 67 yards, and averaged 40 yards on six punts.

Stockton followed those performances with perhaps his best all-round output in an epic 20–14 win in a muddy, rain-soaked game at Dornblaser Field in Missoula against the University of Montana. An injury-riddled Gonzaga team went into halftime trailing, 14–0. Dorais uncharacteristically chastised the team in the locker room with a single snarky statement: “What a fine bunch of football players!”23 The Bulldogs responded, scoring 20 unanswered second half points. Stockton was the stalwart, amassing 310 rushing yards on 30 carries. He passed for 65 more and ran back five kicks, one for 35 yards, another for 25. Later in the season, the Oregonian in Stockton’s hometown, Portland, used the game as a promotional tool to show that he was not only on par with the likes of Red Grange, but combined with Stockton’s defense exceeded the back for the undefeated University of Illinois.
