CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The problem I ran into was a lack of sleep. We left Denver at a little after midnight, so unless we set some speed records, we were looking at a seven hour drive just to get to Albuquerque. There was no way I could stay awake for that. Agent Hart looked tired, too, but I was worried he might be faking it. We went through Trinidad, Colorado at around three in the morning. I wanted to get a motel room, but I wasn’t sure what I could do with Agent Hart. Did he have handcuffs?

We kept going.

We crossed into New Mexico, and I felt my eyelids getting heavy. Once I thought of that, I felt like there was a hypnotist swinging a gold watch in front of me, and I started to feel sleepy, very sleepy. My head nodded forward a bit, then I jerked it back, and tried to blink myself awake.

I noticed Agent Hart angling his sunglasses toward the rearview mirror. Somehow, I didn’t think Jonna would be impressed if her choice for a savior fell asleep on the way to rescue her. I needed some rest, and I needed it soon. I leaned forward, rubbing my eyes. As I started watching the road, I felt a yawn coming on. I stifled it as best I could.

Twenty minutes later, I finally saw a sign for a rest area.

“There’s a rest stop in one mile. I want you to pull off there, and park.”

“That doesn’t seem like a good idea,” Agent Hart said.

“I didn’t ask for your opinion.”

“Your call, Sport.”

He took the ramp to the rest area. Trucks idled in a line, and a number of cars were parked in the lot before the restrooms. I saw soda machines and candy machines in a gazebo-like structure.

“Park at the far end, away from everyone.”

He did as I said.

“Shut off the engine and hand the keys to me.”

He did.

I opened my door, stepped out and stretched, keeping the gun in the shadows in case anyone was watching.

“I want you to slowly exit the car,” I said. “Remember, I have your gun.”

“I remember. Any chance you’d let me take a piss?”

“Move to the back of the car.”

He started toward the back, and I kept the gun at waist level.

“That’s far enough. Place your palms on the trunk and spread your legs.”

“You already searched me.”

“Not properly,” I said.

“I don’t have any more guns.”

“Palms on the trunk.”

He hesitated, but finally assumed the position. I kicked his legs farther apart so he’d be more off balance. I tucked the gun into the waist of my jeans at the small of my back. Then I gave him a proper pat down. He didn’t have another gun, but he did have a pocket knife and a cell phone. I confiscated them. I didn’t want to touch his crotch, but I couldn’t risk him having a weapon hidden there, so I just patted him all the way around.

“A little to the left,” he said.

“You’re a riot,” I said.
