Chapter 25
Groom Lake, Nevada â 1 March 2047
James Egan was almost paralyzed with fear, though only the most dedicated student of body language would have noticed. What had begun as a puzzle fifteen years before was now the focus of intense media scrutiny, intellectual jealousy and over three trillion dollars of hardware. Today his Quantum Information Theory would be tested in the crucible of particle physics. His career was on the verge of superstardom or total ruin, and only the niggling thought that he may have overlooked some obvious-in-hindsight detail was holding him back from enjoying being the center of attention.
Still, this was his moment and he wondered yet again how it was that his theory, over all the others proposed to unify the forces in the Universe, was being exposed on the world stage. It just did not seem credible that a few key insights could have led to the custom-built Sandia twin beam collider facility. It was like a dream sequence even though he felt very much awake.
Reviewing his solution of the Jones Set once more, Egan was unaware that the gossip.com crew had swung their cast back his way. Jessica Brandon, the anchor of gossip.comâs Famous People Multicast did not interrupt the brooding figure, wondering exactly what tack to take with him. She breathed <Any thoughts?> to Toby Everix, her unit director. Through the twick his instructions were clear.
<Soft start, butter up, history then jugular.>
Jessica smiled. They were not called gossip.com for nothing and she knew the muck her field staff had dredged up would stick whether it was true or not.
She was about to move in when the twick whispered, <Hold it.>
Looking at Egan she could see one of those serendipitous visuals that no amount of planning could deliver. It really was too perfect and for Tobyâs sake, she murmured with delight.
In profile, Egan was slightly hunched, his eyes focused on an inner world that few people could really comprehend. He had a strong silhouette, with short dark hair and a straight, clean jawline. His clothes were immaculate casuals, reflecting his confident style and hiding his radical brilliance.
Behind him, the crowd in the control room had briefly parted and on the big Mitsubishi holo, she could clearly see the now classic simulation of a supersymmetric wormhole renting the fabric of space-time. As the wormhole grew, it seemed to be reaching out to Egan, an angry God with ambiguous intentions. Jessica could not decide if this God was going to consume him or embrace him and if her jaded senses managed an emotional hit from the image, she knew her audience would be going wild.
The spell was broken when the crowd pressed back in, so she pushed forward, eager to follow up on the powerful intro.
âJames, hi itâs Jessica Brandon from gossip.com. I wonder if we could take a few minutes of your time?â
Egan turned, flustered at being caught unawares but realizing that it would be ungracious to refuse an interview.
His charm, when it was turned on,
