“Hello?” I groan.

It’s way too late for a call.

“Barry,” my ex-wife says sounding nervous.

I shoot out of bed immediately checking the caller id and the time.

“It’s 1 in the morning, Maddison. What’s wrong?” I question.

‘Listen carefully and don’t freak out,” she says carefully.

“Daddy,” I hear my daughter cry in the background. She sounds like she’s in pain and I can also hear other people trying to console her.

My entire body tenses.

“What’s wrong with her?” I ask coldly. “I swear to God, Maddison if you don’t tell me right now...”

“She said she wanted cookies so I decided to try and prepare some for her. It was going well. We finished the batter and I turned around for a second. I swear it was just one second, Barry and the next thing I know, she had sliced her hand open. There was so much blood, Barry.”

To her credit, she sounds scared but I can’t concentrate on that because I’m beyond scared right now. I put on some clothes and grab my car keys.

“Which hospital?” I ask Maddison. She tells me what hospital they are in and I hang up before she gets her next word out.

It turns out, that Tess is going to need 5 stitches. They keep her in the hospital overnight. Maddison and I stay right next to her bed. Morning comes and Tessa’s still sleeping. I stare at her bandaged hand. I hope it doesn’t leave a scar. I haven’t had the chance to speak to a doctor yet. By the time I got here, her wound was already sown and bandaged. She must have been in a lot of pain.

“Barry, I’m going to grab some coffee. Do you want some?” Madison asks with a small smile.

It’s a peace offering. I know the incident isn’t necessarily her fault but I can’t help but blame her to some extent since it happened under her supervision.

“I’m good,” I tell her, my voice low.

I don’t look at her as she moves away from Tessa’s hospital bed.

I just need her to wake up and tell me what happened.

I’m not saying Maddison would hurt our daughter. I know she loves Tessa as much as I do but this may have happened due to her carelessness.

A call comes in at about 7 am. It’s from Lori.

“Hey,” I answer tiredly.

“Hey. I just wanted to ask how the meeting with Mike went,” she says.

I forgot about that.

“It was okay,” I reply shortly.

“You okay? You sound off. Where are you?” she asks.

“The E.R,” I answer.

“What! Are you okay?” she asks worriedly.

“I’m fine, Lori. It’s Tess. She sliced her hand open with a knife early this morning,” I tell her.

“Oh my gosh. How is she? What hospital are you guys at?” Lori asks. I hear rustling on the other end.

“It’s fine you don’t have to come,” I protest.

“Are you kidding me? I’m coming, give me the address.”

I smile before telling her which hospital it is and exactly where we are. She arrives 20 minutes later, rushing into the E.R.

“Did you fly?” I ask her.
