Chapter ten

Cole

Before I knew it, Crystal lived with me for nearly two weeks. We’d fallen into a comfortable routine of breakfast, sexual tension, and shared dinners on my nights off. Getting off work was more enjoyable than it had been in years. I’d forgotten how nice it was to have someone else at home. How warm and comforting sharing a space with a woman could be.

“You’ve still got your damsel in distress staying with you, huh?” Sam teased one afternoon as we headed back to the station. “Pretty sweet deal if you ask me.”

“I don’t remember asking you,” I grumbled. “And she’s not my ‘damsel in distress.’ She just needed a place to stay in an unfamiliar city. I’m just being a nice guy.”

“Trust me, bud,” Sam retorted. “You’re her knight in shining armor right now. You’re crazy for not hopping on that while the savior complex is hot.”

“Dude,” Cole rolled his eyes and crossed his arms. “She’s vulnerable right now. I’d feel like I was taking advantage of her. It just wouldn’t be right.”

“Or would it be smart?” Sam countered and let out a laugh. “You confuse me, Cole. You have a hot girl staying in your house, and you’re wasting the opportunity. She sounds like some choice piece of ass.”

“Dude, not cool.” I frowned and shook my head. “Don’t talk that way about her. She’s sexy as fuck—I’d be blind not to see it—but life isn’t always about getting laid.”

“Alright. Alright.” He backed up and threw his palms in the air. “But if you do the deed at least give me a few details.”

I scowled at him, and he dropped the subject.

“That’s a nice watch you got there,” Sam said. “Where’d you get it?”

My cheeks flushed. “It was a thank-you gift from Crystal.”

I thought I wouldn’t hear the end of it, but all he said was, “Interesting.”

I tried to ignore the innuendo, but it was too late though. He’d infiltrated my thoughts. My mind wandered to Crystal during the lulls in the shift the next day. I pictured her wearing her favorite old t-shirt so thin I could see her taut nipples. The gentleman in me always tried not to look, but I couldn’t help it. My carnal, primal side practically salivated anytime she wore it. Fuck. I shook my head hoping to get rid of the thought. I couldn’t wait to get off, away from Sam, and get some decent sleep. Maybe that would get her out of my mind.

The rest of the shift flew by with several calls for small fires, people trapped in elevators, and one hostage situation. I strolled into the house and threw my keys on the side table. The smell of citrus cleaning supplies lingered in the air. Vacuum lines. No clutter. Crystal.

At first glance, she was nowhere to be seen, but I saw her car in the lot. Rushing water sounded through the apartment. Once again, the thought of her wet body in the shower burned a fire in me. It took every ounce of self-restraint not to knock on the door and ask to accompany her.
