This pose makes good use of the rock (even though you can hardly see it). In your photo, you can use a small table or stool and get similar results.

Where would this pose work?

Could you recreate this indoors?

Could you add more people?

This is a great example of how subjects of varying height can all be on the same level.

Notice how the woman is leaning her head on the little boy. This creates a sense of closeness.

Could this be done sitting or standing?

This is another group pose that can be done indoors or out, as the background is minimal. A backless park bench would be ideal for a pose like this.

Would you rearrange the subjects or change the angle that they are facing the camera?

Looking at the three examples above, you can see where a very simple pose on a plain background can have as much impact as a pose that is a little more involved on a busier background.
