âNo, it doesnât bother me,â I said to Jane. âIâve been doing this for months now, remember?â
âTrue, but since weâre going to be moving into new quarters soon, I wanted to make sure.â
I handed her another freshly washed soup bowl. âI havenât been helping with the household chores because I was trying to worm my way into your affections,â I assured her as she dried the bowl with one of those embroidered dishtowels her aunt up in Fresno kept sending her.
âSome men, you know, resent housework, consider it beneath them.â
âI donât know about them other fellers youâve lived with, maâam, but far as Iâm concernedâand I canât speak for the other wranglersâI sure donât feel like no sissy âcause I do these here dishes.â
âThere you go again, getting silly when Iâm trying to be serious.â
I passed her the saucepan Iâd just scrubbed. âWhat youâve got is opening night jitters,â I suggested. âWeâve lived together peaceably since way last fall. Moving into a new and bigger house isnât going to affect howââ
âUp until now, though, youâve had a separate house of your own and so have I,â Jane persisted while drying the pan. âWhen we move next month, weâll be committed to one house. If you want to be by yourself for some reason, you wonât have a spare place to go to. Neither will I.â
I gestured in the direction of the Pacific Ocean with the hand that wasnât holding the sponge. âI can always sleep on the beach if we have a quarrel,â I told her. âYou arenât having second thoughts about this merger, are you?â
âNo, but I want to make sure that you arenât.â
Dropping the sponge in the sink, I wiped my hands on her dishtowel and then put them on her shoulders. I leaned and kissed her.
The phone in the living room commenced ringing.
We continued kissing for six more rings and then I moved back and away. âBetter answer.â
I picked it up on the ninth ring. âOkay,â I said.
âHello, Frank, how are you?â
âIâm okay, Polly. Did your mother come home?â
Polly Pilgrim sounded both polite and happy. âYes, and Iâm at her house now with her,â she replied. âI tried to telephone Groucho to tell him the news, but his son answered and said he was out and probably wouldnât be back all afternoon.â
âHeâs tracking down clues, Polly.â
The young singer asked, âAre you getting anywhere? What I mean is, do you have any evidence that sheâs innocent?â
Jane was leaning in the doorway, watching me. I smiled at her. To Polly I said, âWe havenât got anything to take to the law yet, but weâre finding out quite a bit.â
âLike what, Frank?â
âGroucho and I want to talk to your motherâsometime today if possibleâand weâll go over everything then, Polly.â
âShe canât see you today.â
âHow come?â
âSheâs not feeling very well, sheâs sick really.â
âYou talk to a doctor?â
âYes, my father sent Dr. Steinberg over. Thatâs our family doctor.â
âAnd he says?â
âProbably influenza, but not a serious case. Though maybe itâs food poisoning from the jail meals.
