If Carden was hiding some nefarious deed, it was too well hidden for us to detect. The master of the territory under Old City had found every book or scrap of lore on vampires from before the Resurgence and commercialized it. There were vampires walking around in capes with slicked-back hair, ghost-white faces, and fake blood dribbling down their chins.

At least I hoped it was fake.

A group of vampires in one corner were dressed in casual pre-Resurgence clothing. They’d used magic to change the color of their eyes from red to amber. The lot of them looked as if they’d walked through a cloud of pixie dust, and their exposed skin shimmered under the magelights crafted to mimic sunlight. There were other odd iterations of the same theme: Vampires throughout history.

I made a mental note to bring Brooke here sometime provided Carden wasn’t involved in this mess. This kind of nonsense had been totally up her alley before I was taken. She might still enjoy it.

“Can you believe that?” Lucan said with a shake of his head as we left Cardens Citadel. “And people were just eating it up.”

Lucan had nearly punched one of the employees when he’d slunk over and caressed my neck, whispering, “I vant to suck your blood,” in some odd accent. Lucan only failed to do so because I’d done it first.

It was a good thing vampires healed quickly, or the actor would have been sipping his blood through a straw for the next month. The guards had suggested we leave after that, and we hadn’t had a compelling reason to stay.

“Are you alright?” Lucan asked as we headed to Dagmar’s to give our report. This was the third time in the last minute he’d checked on me, and a flash of annoyance surged through me. I pushed it away.

Shrugging, I said, “Yeah.” I’d never been one for strangers, especially men who initiated contact without asking.

Lucan looked at me weird, kind of sad, kind of happy, and I was about to ask what was going through his head when my phone pinged.

“It’s Dagmar. Something’s come up. He’s asking that we visit tomorrow afternoon instead.” Ugh. My sleep pattern had shifted, and meeting him in the afternoon would be like waking up at six a.m.

His request was strange too. I figured nothing would be more important to him than this case, and we’d already delayed twice. Dagmar should be chomping at the bit to receive our report.

Plus, without his direction, we were at a bit of a standstill. Curtis’s warning surfaced in my mind, and it sent a bolt of dread through me. It was only three days until the height of the festival, and we were already out of leads.

“Must be something big,” Lucan agreed, and his mouth pinched. Then his face brightened and his eyes gleamed with excitement. “You know what that means.” His voice took on a boyish tone that immediately made me suspicious. “We get time to have a proper date.”

Lucan laughed at the aghast look on my face.
