ZAZEN

Zen is the most widely practiced form of meditation in Japan.

The core of Zen practice is the sitting position. It is called zazen in Japanese. Zazen includes a couple ways of sitting, known as postures. The seiza posture is sitting with your back erect and your legs folded beneath you, but you can also sit with your legs crossed. Usually, you sit on a zabuton, which is a large square or round cushion placed on a padded mat. Even so, it may feel more hard than soft.

The point of sitting on the floor and facing the center of the room is to regulate the mind. Awareness is directed toward counting or watching the breath or centering the flow of energy toward the navel. A primary rule of practice is meditation with no objects or anchors. Just concentrate on the breath.

Zen experts recommend 5 or 10 minutes of daily practice.

Zen teaches that the ego will naturally resist the spirit, so discipline and regularity of practice are important for progress.
