Chapter 20

Eventually, Lucan made the show of remembering I was there. However, it took one of the Protector's spouses striking up a conversation with me to ‘spark’ his memory. The pitying look I got from Holden was nice, even if he didn’t know it was an act on Lucan’s part. I decided to save Lucan’s reputation some, limiting myself to an eye roll in return.

By two in the morning, my nerves were shot. When the Triad made their grand exit, Lucan grabbed my hand and forced me to march with him. Outside, carriages lined the street. Eyes roving, I kept a smile plastered on my face. Nothing felt off. Everything was quiet. It was beginning to look like Lucan’s information had been false. But then again, it was only the first night.

The red carpet ended, and we split off towards our carriage. Max swung his sizeable black head towards me, his lips quirking in a way unique to horses when they were excited. When we were close enough, I let go of Lucan’s arm and placed both my hands under Max’s velvety muzzle.

“Hello there. Thank you for waiting for us.” I placed my forehead against his and let Max’s calm presence saturate my soul. I sighed. I could grow to love this branch of my magic. Why had I waited so long to explore it?

I let go of the horse and turned. Lucan waited for me at the carriage door. He was holding it open with a blank look on his face. Ah, is it beneath the mighty Protector to be pleasant to the help? I shook the uncharitable thought away. I was tired, and it was making it hard to remember that Lucan was playing a role as well. I did believe though, that however aloof he needed to appear, it should never be beneath him to be polite.

“Thank you for waiting, Steve. It must have been dull.”

The man on the seat gave me a wide grin. “It wasn’t so bad, miss.” He leaned down a little and pitched his voice low. “Us drivers paid one of the young lads to give us a heads up when people were leaving. That let us enjoy a few rounds of cards.”

He winked at me. I couldn’t help the chuckle that escaped. Lucan’s eye twitched. He’d either heard what Steve had said, or I was taking too long. Meh.

Lucan helped me into the carriage. Like the trip here, we sat on opposite sides. He didn’t look at me for a long time. When he noticed we were on our way back to the guild, he spoke up.

“I’ll take you home. Tell me your address and we’ll take you there.” So lovely of Lucan to presume on Steve and Max’s time.

“No, thank you. I want to change and make my notes before I go home. I may even crash at the guild.” While my deepest, darkest instincts trusted Lucan—a terrifying prospect—I was not about to invite him to my home, especially since I’d just punished Brooke for doing that very thing.
