Chapter 23

I awoke a few hours later from my first dreamless sleep in years. I brushed the twigs and leaves off my clothes and picked some of the larger pieces out of my hair. The rest could wait until I had time for a shower.

Bark scratched at my skin as I placed a hand on the oak’s trunk. I sent a burst of emotions, images, and memories to the tree—happy memories. Brooke in a sunny field. Alec swimming and diving in a crystal-clear lake, a beautiful place we’d found a week after our escape.

I continued my thank-you with more memories. The oak tentatively took in the gift. Its wariness saddened me, and I cursed the mage who’d abused it. For only an abuse of power would make a tree fearful of accepting a gift. After a moment, the tree’s fear passed and it greedily accepted my offering, savoring my experiences.

The oak reached out to me with its aura, curious as to why I’d slept in its branches. I gave it images of Skye, of looking for her, of her needing my help. The tree hesitated, unsure, then I felt the flow of impressions start. Far more controlled than the seedling, they came like a voice in the wind.

“Child of the earth, Ddaear has long awaited you. The bright hope for the land. I have seen a child who matches the one you seek. She traveled hand in hand with two cloaked figures.” I knew the words weren’t words. They were my brain stringing together the information given to me by the tree. “They passed under my branches, as any happy family would.” That confused me. The tree had picked up happiness in their auras. “They entered a stone shelter further down the road.” The words echoed with the visual. The three strolled down the streets and turned into a house on the left side. Two fifty-five, it was a house address. YES!

Gratitude infused me, and I gave it all to the oak. It soaked up the feelings and impressions, everything I had to offer. “Thank you, child of Ddaear. You have given me a great gift.” The tree truly felt that, but underneath, I sensed its loneliness. I understood. Few humans populated this area, and the only vegetation was grass. The old oak was a lone sentinel in a barren plain.

What, or who, was Ddaear? I’d never heard that word before—another puzzle for another day. Reaching into the cotton pouch, I had just the thing to ease its loneliness. “I have another gift for you, Derw.” The title came out of nowhere, but it felt right. “A young friend to ease your loneliness.”

Across the street, there was a good-sized patch of earth. It was far enough that the seedling wouldn’t compete with the massive oak for resources, but close enough that the two trees would be able to pass impressions back and forth. I crossed the street. Kneeling, I dug a hole in the dirt. Carefully, I transplanted the seedling and patted the earth into place.
