Chapter 25

Doc invited Colonel Sam into her office.

“What’s going on? I was just about to inspect the defences.”

“Calm down Colonel. I’ve just received comms from Hawaii. I thought it was relevant and might be of some use to you.”

The Colonel harrumphed and sat in the offered seat.

“Drink?”

“Coffee, Black.” The Colonel didn’t sound grateful for the offer.

The first comm was the video footage with soundtrack from the Tesla submarine.

“I saw it the first time but I wasn’t given a copy of this and I was given no details,” said Colonel Sam. “How come you were given this?”

“Because it applies to my research.”

“Research. We just need bigger and more powerful guns.” Colonel Sam was not in a happy place.

“Shall I start the video?”

“Go on then.”

Doc started the footage from the sail cam on the Tesla. They watched it in silence.

After it had finished, neither said anything for a few moments until Doc said, “There has been no sign of the Tesla or their crew since this event. I will run it again.”

Again. Silence greeted the ending.

“What are you thinking Colonel?”

“As I said. I’ve already seen it. What the hell has this got to do with an alien invasion?”

“Good question. Allow me to put the next comm on the monitor.”

This time they watched the Kraken attack on the boats on the shore by the slipway. Colonel Sam was about to take a sip of coffee but as soon as he saw the Kraken his jaw dropped and he sat open-mouthed during the footage and in the middle, he dropped his cup of coffee onto his trousers.

Doc paused the film but Colonel Sam said, “carry on, carry on.”

The film continued and Doc noted that Colonel Sam visibly relaxed towards the end of the footage. When it ended, he stood up.

“Do you have a towel or something?”

“I have a hair drier. After all, I am a woman.” Doc took a rechargeable hair dryer from her desk and handed it to the Colonel.

He accepted it gratefully and dried himself off. “Thank you.” He handed the hair drier back to Doc. “Can we watch that again, please.”

Doc noted the ‘thank you’ and the ‘please’.

After the video finished Doc read from a text she had printed, “The trooper that severed the tentacle arm is Lieutenant Jethro Tull, and the trooper he saved is Trooper William Cody. Both are OK but the islander has died.”

At first the Colonel said nothing.

“I know Jethro Tull,” said Doc. “He and his team rescued me from Mars.”

“I know him and the other trooper too,” said Colonel Sam. “They come from my base.”

Doc noted there was a lighter and less belligerent tone to his voice. “So Colonel, do you still think this has nothing to do with the alien invasion?”

“I can’t see a connection, but I’m no longer discounting it. There may be something in what you say. What’s on the third video?”

Doc put on the third video which had footage of the caves and the cave paintings.

“I still don’t see the connection.” said
