The Basilica of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows is Slovakia’s national shrine and the representation of the Virgin Mary cradling her crucified Son is the country’s patron saint. The distinctive ‘squashed onion’ domes of the monastery church are reminiscent of the style used in many Austrian churches.

The basilica’s entrance is a simple door, framed by sculpted surrounds and a Latin inscription.

The sanctified golden crowns were placed on the Virgin and Jesus at the shrine’s 300th anniversary celebrations in 1864.
