When Amalia shared her pathway into journalism with me, it felt very relatable to my own route into higher education, some of which I have already detailed. She also had a father in the same field who exposed her early on to the joys and opportunities of that occupation. She’d always loved writing and found that it was something she was good at and enjoyed. And she briefly considered a career in another field (for her it was dramatic arts; for me it was psychology) before settling back on her initial path and pursuing the same line of work as her father. (I didn’t ask her if her dad also regularly provides unsolicited ideas for projects and assignments she could be doing, but I definitely wondered.)

Amalia completed college and graduate school on the East Coast. Midway through earning her master’s degree, she applied for an unpaid internship at a major online magazine. At the time, she was also working part time in a restaurant to make ends meet and cover the costs associated with living in an expensive city. That unpaid internship proved to be her foot in the door. Though she initially had to work other jobs simultaneously to pay her bills, she eventually landed a paid internship with the same magazine. That paid internship turned into a part-time position, which eventually became a full-time, salaried job. Thus, in the span of about eighteen months, Amalia went from being an unpaid intern working a restaurant job on the side to a salaried writer for a major online publication.
