CHAPTER 17

Major Elaine Swift stood transfixed. She was in a wing of the medical bay that was sealed off for xeno-biological research. The Marathon was a battleship, but it had quarantine capability, as well as medical research equipment. After getting the body of the new alien, the one that had landed on New Terra and subsequently gotten itself killed by the three aliens who left with Mitch Murphy in tow, she had been studying it. A week was spent on physical examination and recording of its intact body. The cause of death was some sort of stab wound to its lower chest. Major Swift had photographed, recorded, and scanned the body. After that came the more time-consuming internal anatomy procedure.

The frozen body was sliced up in tiny slivers ten micrometers in width. The resulting slide was then photographed from both sides, and scanned into a special computer that put everything back together in a holographic display that showed every organ, bone, tissue, blood vessel, and nerve bundle in the alien’s body. Most fascinating of all was the creature’s brain. Unlike a human’s brain that is two halves equally divided, the alien had a long, cylindrical brain. The computer had run DNA analysis, as well as tests on the creature’s blood and several tissue samples. Major Swift had no idea what race the alien was, or why it had come to New Terra in its strange ship, but she knew a great deal about its body and anatomy.

All the frozen slides of the creature had been reassembled and locked away in a frozen container. Entire teams of researchers would spend their careers studying the alien. It had already been shipped back through the portal on a supply ship, but Major Swift had the holographic data, and the alien’s strange clothing. Most importantly, she had its weapon. A simple, wooden shaft made of something akin but not exactly like birchwood. It was light weight, but strong. Unfortunately, it had been cut in two during the alien’s fight with the trio from the crescent-shaped ship. But what was really intriguing were the two blades, one at each end. They were simple, almost primitive looking blades. Not forged or cast like Earth’s metals. In fact, it looked like it was flint napped from some kind of stone, only without the grooves and chip marks that come from striking a stone to shape it. Instead, the blades were molded, and consisted of an element that wasn’t on the periodic table.

The weapons had been scanned, photographed, and recorded in a variety of ways. All that data had been sent back to Earth with the alien’s body, but Major Swift kept them. An alien material, both primitive and deadly. What fascinated her most as a military officer was the fact that the blades on either end of the spear were sharper than any razor. Scans showed the cutting edges on either side of the leaf-shaped blades were honed down to a single atom, allowing the material to cut through practically anything when applied with enough force.
