Barentsen's Traveling Show of Marvels Staging Ground, Magdeburg, USE

"What?"

Much as the last time they had seen each other, Jan Barentsen's response was reminiscent of a man who had just been hit in the head (an experience Albrecht could still recall with unpleasant familiarity). Instead of repeating himself immediately, Albrecht turned and gestured behind him to the rest of his party with a wild grin on his face. The last leg of the journey itself had been the easiest, once they found someone willing and able to rent a railroad freight car that could bear Hansken's weight. Hansken herself looked utterly absurd beneath the thick coat of blankets they had bought from a Genovese wool merchant and sewn roughly together, but seemed more curious about the strange surroundings than discomfited by the cold. Kuwat and Caterina were off to one side, so close it looked as if they were fused at the hip. The two had been close to inseparable all the way from Palermo. Caterina's experiences seemed to make them both inclined to progress slowly, even if Albrecht hadn't been watching them like a hawk. He still expected that they would be setting a speed record between marriage altar and bridal bed when the time came, for all that Tomas had already begun calling Kuwat 'Papa.'

"She followed me home, Jan. Can I keep her?"
