B lake paced under the protection of the trees. When would this storm end? God had answered his prayers for mercy before. Maybe he would answer it again. For right now, if a break didnât come soon, he might not make it without killing someone.
If he counted how many times he regretted opening up his home to others, it would drive him mad. Yet others had even fuller dwellings, like Arland. That man could scarcely breathe, much less move in his shelter.
As if his thoughts brought him out, Arland followed his tracks toward where he stood in the forest.
âYou look like a wild animal trapped in a zoo,â Arland said as a greeting.
âYou must feel the same,â Blake said, stopping his pacing long enough to shake his friendâs hand.
âIâm wishing for a weather forecast like the old days so we could at least have hope for a day of clear skies to look forward to.â
âIt has been a long four days.â
âIt has.â Arland swiped down his face, the circles under his eyes stating just how long the nights had been.
âAt least Brent and his family have their own dwelling now, thanks to you and the others.â
âHis wife still improving?â Blake asked, feeling somewhat attached since he had been repeatedly told that he had saved her life, a fact that Brent despised him even more for.
âShe is, because of you.â
âAnd the boy?â
âHealthy and surly, just as always.â Arlandâs eyebrows furrowed like the thought of the boyâs bad attitude worried him.
âLike father, like son.â
âUnfortunate truth at times.â
âAnd Hannah?â At times Blake felt awful for not keeping better track of the girl he had rescued, or rather his wife had rescued, at the start of this new world.
âItâs strange seeing her with Tyler.â
âI bet.â Blake tugged on his beanie. He didnât want to think about Mercy growing up and having a boyfriend.
âTyler has talked to me about marriage.â
âWhat?!â Blake choked on the word. âSheâs only eighteen.â
âSo, itâs not just me being overprotective?â Arland glanced at him like he thought he might be the only one that thought that way.
âNo, man. I mean, so much changes between eighteen and your mid-twenties, and marriage is a lifetime commitment.â
âYeah, lifelong,â Arland said, his gaze traveling back toward camp. âWhat do you think about Laurie?â
Blake stopped moving and looked at his friend. He didnât know if most men talked about stuff like this, but in the trenches when death seemed inevitable, men spoke more freely, sharing things they normally wouldnât. So it wasnât new to him, though he was surprised by Arland going there.
âSheâs a steadfast gal,â Blake said carefully.
He knew Kris thought they should just go for it. Both Arland and Laurie had lost their spouses, and it was obvious that there was more than just physical attraction between the two of them...or so she said at least. He didnât dig into thoughts like that.
âShe is. This community wouldnât have come this far without her.â Arland rubbed his gloved hands together.
The cold was impregnable, but men like he and Arland could only handle so much of the cramped quarters.
