Chapter 12

Stephanie's wheelchair was being pushed down the hallway of the hospital by a nurse. Her mother Barbara walked beside them. When they came up to the door of the chapel, Stephanie's head turned, and she beheld a lit cross in that room of prayer. "Can we go in there for a few minutes?"

The nurse looked at Barbara. "Fine by me."

"Sure."

The nurse made the sharp turn and positioned Stephanie right in front of the room, very near to the cross. I'll just leave you two alone here for a few minutes if that's alright?"

Barbara nodded. "Thanks."

"Mom, thank you so much for dropping everything and coming to see me."

"Are you kidding? How could I not come to see you in the hospital after such a harrowing ordeal? I know I don't always show it, but there's nothing more important in my life than you. "

"Except God?"

"That's the way it should be. But to tell you the truth, God had fallen down my priority list lately. Having my little girl miraculously restored to me has changed my whole outlook on life."

"That would make two of us. I'm so sorry for being such a pain."

"You already apologized for that three times. And I accepted three times."

"Make it four, please. Where did I go wrong? Three and a half years ago I came into this college believing that God existed and he loved me. How did I let Him go so easily and so quickly? Mom, do you believe in the devil? Did he whisper in my ear like he did to Eve, and I ate of his apple?"

"That makes sense when we look at what's going on in our world. And all your college professors and entertainment providers are listening to him too and helping him deceive kids like you."

"I'm not listening to his voice anymore."

Brad walked into the room and proceeded to the front. When Stephanie saw him, flowers in hand, she lit up almost as bright as the cross.

"Brad! What are you doing here?"

"I came to visit the invalid, but it appears she is no longer confined to her room or without company."

"How nice of you! And the flowers are for me?"

"No, they're for a cute little nurse that–. Of course they're for you."

He held them out to her.

"Thank you."

Barbara faked a cough.

"Oh, Brad, I'd like you to meet my mother, Barbara Carter."

Barbara held out her hand, and he shook it.

"It's really a pleasure to meet you," he said. "I can see where Stephanie gets her beauty."

"I like this kid already. We're going to a restaurant so Stephanie can celebrate her escape from hospital food. Would you like to join us? I'd like to find out all about you."

"It would be an honor, ma'am."
