Nine

“Hello?” Grace dropped the groceries on the table, breathing audibly as she answered the phone.

“Miss Brawlins?”

“Yes, who is this?”

“It’s Emily Jensen, Josh’s teacher.”

Grace’s heart sank. “Oh, Miss Jensen, is Josh in trouble?”

“No, no, nothing like that. This call is of a personal nature. I hope you don’t mind. Is this a good time?”

Grace tried to concentrate in her confusion while she watched Josh get himself his Lunchable and set himself down for a less-than-healthy dinner. “Sure. What can I do for you, Miss Jensen?”

“I wanted to invite you to church this Sunday. Well, you and Josh.”

Grace felt more riddled with questions than before. What was this sudden interest in her getting religion that everyone seemed to have? Now, Miss Jensen too. And what about church and state? Was this woman allowed to invite her to church? Wasn’t that going against the Constitution or something?

Grace finally found her tongue. “Fireman Mike already asked Josh to church this Sunday. He said he has the day off before leaving for his new training in Los Angeles. I was actually thinking of going with the two of them.” Grace thought she heard Miss Jensen’s breath catch, and she found herself rattling off an excuse. “I think it might be good for Josh, you know, to have the two of us there.”

“We’ll be going together, Miss Brawlins. Mike and I. I was calling to invite you with us.”

Grace watched Josh, trying to avoid the feelings churning within her. Jealousy. Red hot, boiling jealousy. Plain and simple, that’s what she felt. An emotion not present within her since she’d found out Lyle was seeing other women at the office before his father could ship him off to his Masters.

“That’s very kind of you, Miss Jensen, but I am confident Josh will be in good hands with the two of you.”

“Great. You’ll have a nice morning to yourself then. Maybe you can treat yourself and a friend to brunch.”

“Yes, that sounds nice,” Grace pretended, lowering herself into a chair. She didn’t have the money to enjoy a brunch out, with or without a friend. She’d probably spend her Sunday morning alone, curled up on the couch with a cooking show, lamenting why she ever gave up precious time with Josh to these strangers.

“Did Mike say what time he’d be picking up Josh? I’ll probably just meet him at your house and save him a trip to pick me up.”

“He said he’d come at nine.”

“You’re sure you won’t come with us. We usually have a late breakfast or lunch following the service.” It wasn’t a question. It was more of a statement. “We’ll probably get back about one-thirty.”

“You know, Miss Jensen, I only get my son nights and weekends, that’s a long time for me to be away from him. Maybe—”

“Nonsense. The break will do you good. Mike is always talking about how tired you look. This will give you a chance to rest.”

Grace stretched the phone cord to the small mirror at the back door. Taking a forefinger, she pulled her under eye area, studying the bags.
