Mya held my hand as we made our way down the stairwell. Demtrius and Nadina were close behind. Nadina had asked me where her father was, and I told her he was following the Serpent of the Sea. She appeared slightly surprised by this, but was quick to hide the reaction.

On the descent, we encountered Laxiter’s group coming from the south tower. All of them were carry sacks or chests, and they looked happy as can be. I stopped one of them to ask what had happened, and the sailor responded jubilantly.

"When we entered the tower, we discovered the pirate's sleeping quarters,” he explained. “We found a few of the scoundrels stuffing their bags full of riches, but when they saw us they quickly scampered off through one of the tower windows. The clever rogues had a zip-line, can you believe it? Didn’t really matter much to us though. There was a Chieftain’s ransom in that room, all bagged up and ready to move! All we have to do now is carry the bags down to the ship!"

"What about the prisoners?" I asked. “Did you find them anywhere in the tower?”

“Did we!” he exclaimed triumphantly. “We rescued dozens of them! They are on their ways to the ship as we speak.”

When we finally made it down to the harbor, I saw a line of female Tatorans boarding Vengeance and the River-Rapt, along with whatever treasures our crew could carry. The male slaves were still yet to be found, but Kinto and a contingent of villagers were scouring the lower sections of the fortress.

Quiva was standing at the helm of the River-Rapt, with a look of grave responsibility upon his face. Kinto must have appointed him captain of the vessel, since he had been first mate aboard Vengeance.

A long line of grungy Tatorans began making their way down the stone steps to the harbor, and I realized that they must be the male slaves from the dungeon. Sure enough, Kinto soon appeared at the top of the steps. His disappointment from the tower rooftop seemed to have vanished, and was replaced by an exultant triumph. He spoke with Lorthredo and Montaug for a few seconds, and then made his way down the steps alongside the freed prisoners while Lorthredo and Montaug went back into the fortress.

"Don't pack the ships with too much treasure," Kinto yelled to the crew jokingly. "We don't want them over-burdened."

The crew laughed at this, seeing as how most of the treasure was already aboard, and the freed prisoners alone would weigh us down considerably. It did make me somewhat worried though. The River-Rapt was small and light enough to escape from the cave entrance at the head of the canal, even burdened as it was, but Vengeance had already proven to be too cumbersome. Perhaps, I thought, the River-Rapt could tow Vengeance out of the cave, or else we’d be forced to leave Vengeance behind. On top of this, I also worried that the Serpent of the Sea was still at large, packed with pirates, and who knew when they might return.
