On the way to the canyon, I changed our course, setting us to Horseshoe bend, the best spot in my opinion for sunset in this part of Arizona. Liam didn’t put up a fight to my decision, especially not after I promised to take him again another day, and we pull into the parking lot just as the sky starts to show signs of a deepening gold, excitement blooming when I see it.

Liam parks the car, taking a sip of the smoothie that is mostly gone.

“Ready?” I ask.

He nods, and we step out of the car. I reach up and adjust my turtleneck, pulling the sleeves of my crewneck down. Liam comes around the car with a blanket in one hand, and he reaches out with the other, intertwining our fingers again without a second thought.

I’ve decided handholding, or at least holding Liam’s hand, has brought more life to me than anything else. I step closer to him as I lead him in the direction of the curve of the bend to give us the best view. My shoulder brushes his upper arm, his warmth seeping through all the layers as our hands rest between our bodies.

The red dirt is damp from previous rain, thank God, because otherwise it sticks to you like a second skin. We head towards the spot I know of, a cliff kind of, but it’s flat on the top so we can watch the sun descend in the sky. When we reach it, the entire bend is visible, the curve around the rock formation in the center and the water that runs through it.

I move to sit, but Liam stays standing, his hand tightening on mine as his eyes roam over the canyon. “This is beautiful.”

My eyes move away from him and focus on the canyon, which I haven’t seen in years. All the grooves and the indents, the shades of red and brown, the formidable formation in the middle. It’s peaceful, even with a few other people around taking in the view. Birds fly overhead, blending into the sky as they become tiny specks on the horizon. The clouds are turning colors now, a breeze blowing past us, but even this high up, it doesn’t feel too bad.

“I forgot how much I love it here,” I mumble, leaning into his shoulder and resting my head on it.

“It suits you.” When he says it, I feel his lips brush the top of my head, and I smile against his arm.

“Are you smiling?”

I hide it, forcing my lips into a frown, but they fight to go back. “Maybe.”

I lean back so I can look at him, the sun hitting his dark skin, making it glow warmly in the light. Liam rolls his eyes at my answer, and before I know it, let’s go of my hand and the blanket to twist me into his arms, his front to my back, and squeezes while he cages me in, my heart careening in my chest.

He leans down and presses his lips to my cheek.
