OWYEN
AFTER FOUR DAYS OF traveling, Lord Tariusâs army made its way to Algarâs Pass. A massive stone bridge connected Lord Tariusâs province to Lord Adairâs. Marco was shocked to find no rival army across the bridge to halt their advance. By this time, Lord Adair had certainly caught word of the massive force marching toward his cities. The sellsword was caught off guard by the wardenâs lack of resistance.
That was until he remembered the legion of gargoyles that protected Heavenâs Gate, and the legacy of every army that attempted to sack the city. The laws of Three Warden prevented Lord Tarius from showing hostility to any village or city in Lord Adairâs province that had not shown hostility toward him. This was a law all wardens had sworn to abide by at the end of the Sovereignty Wars. So on second thought, Marco understood why the Warden of the East did not send an army of his own to greet Lord Tarius.
Why place any obstacles in front of an enemy who marches toward death?
Though there was still light to burn, the army set up camp on the western side of the bridge. This would be their last night within Lord Tariusâs domain. The army took advantage of the Sarren Gulf as they pulled in fish and crabs from the shore. Others ventured out to local villages to find food, wine, and love. They were only a few days away from Heavenâs Gate and everyone knew it. Heavenâs Gate was still far enough away that the men could enjoy themselves for one last night. Yet it was close enough that all the men knew they only had this one last night to do so.
âYou two,â Sir Illeum barked at Marco and Dalvin as they wrapped up pitching their tent. âWith me.â
âWe have been demoted from Griffin Slayers to you two,â Marco jested. Oremund smirked and clapped the dirt from his hands before wiping them on his pants. The two men followed Sir Illeum to a midsize tent guarded by two of Lord Tariusâs personal guards. Apparently, the Warden of the South had finally decided to meet the sellswords he was so heavily paying.
Sir Illeum stepped aside so that Oremund could enter first, followed by Marco. To Marcoâs surprise the tent was completely bare except for a gray-haired man dressed in black and purple leather. He wore an extravagant long sword at his hip. He was clean-shaven, which gave him a youthful appearance despite his true age. He stood around Dalvinâs height and was built with broad warrior shoulders.
âThank you, Sir Illeum.â
âMâlord,â Sir Illeum replied before leaving the tent.
âAt last,â the man said as he opened his arms toward the two sellswords. âI am sorry I have made you travel with us for so long without a proper introduction.â
âNo introduction is needed, my lord,â Marco replied, bowing his head. He glanced at Oremund, who eventually followed suit and bowed his head as well.
âNo, it was rude of me. I am sorry for that, but I was not ready to speak to you until now.
