In front of the casino, the taxis lined up like race cars waiting for a green flag. Leia hoped one of the drivers aspired to win the Winston Cup. Speed over safety today. She was willing to brave the danger if it got her home in record time.

She waved down a yellow cab as she dialed Jenny’s cell number.

“I was starting to get worried,” Jenny said when she answered her phone.

“My physical therapy ran late,” Leia lied as a taxi parked beside her. She waited to open the door.

“I thought it was at noon.”

“It was, but then I ran a few errands.”

“What?”

“Fabrice said I could drive, so I went and bought a coat. Leather.”

“That’s great, Leia. I can’t wait to see your new jacket.”

She clutched her chest like the jacket might appear. She should have thought through her story before she dialed the phone. “I actually just ordered it. Should be in the store on Monday.”

“I guess I’ll see it next week then.”

Leia opened the back door, and the driver turned around when she climbed into his car. “Where to, lady?”

Leia shushed the man with one finger. He shrugged as he pushed the meter.

“Who’s that?” Jenny asked.

“The TV.” She was a rotten liar.

“Did you hear my message?”

“Not yet.”

“I called to apologize. I’m running behind tonight, so I’ll be about fifteen minutes late.”

Finally a break. “Don’t worry about it, Jenny. I can drive myself.”

“Now what fun would that be?”

“But it’s been such a busy day for you.”

“Not too busy to pick you up.”

“I’d really like to drive, Jenny.”

Her friend paused. “No problem. The meeting starts in a half hour.”

“I’ll see you there.”

Leia gave the driver her address, and he rolled his eyes when she told him to book it. She had to arrive at church before Jenny.
