The Tomb of Blades
Enoch led Nara away from the coliseum, but only after theyâd stayed for the end of the play. The heroine had ended up in the same inn where sheâd started, which Enoch claimed was a metaphor for her reincarnation.
They picked their way down a narrow road that wound past storefronts built into whatever nook or cranny would hold them. Unlike in other cities sheâd been in, these people had to work with the terrain, rather than shaping it to their will.
Also unlike other settlements the eru occupants didnât use windows, and didnât advertise their presence in any way. There were no visible lights, and nothing to suggest any shop or residence were occupied. These people had clearly learned not to draw attention to themselves.
âThat tends to happen,â Enoch said in a low voice, âwhen you are the lowest rung of a social order.â
âThe eru are the lowest rung?â She wondered why they put up with it if they were the smartest, and she was also annoyed by how easily Enoch seemed able to read her thoughts.
âWe put up with it because we must,â Enoch admitted. He paused, and leaned heavily on his staff, his chest heaving and tail dragging along the rough ground. âThe other demons do not trust us. The eru were the scholars and the assassins. We took care of the unpleasant business, and our brethren will never forget it, despite it being done for their benefit. They see us as ruthless and power hungry, and they donât like that we occasionally elucidate about our progenitor.â
Of the tribes this one sounded the most like Nara, which when combined with her dreams suggested maybe there was something to her being this reincarnated demon prince. She hoped so, because if they were wrong sheâd already seen what happened to people who tried to breach the tomb and failed.
Enoch led her down a steep ravine, which ended outside of a wide cave mouth. Inside she could see light glinting off something metallic, the lights shifting along the cave wall.
âThatâs it, isnât it?â she murmured, though she already knew the answer.
âIndeed. You made your final stand within, and lured countless water Wyrms to their death,â he said proudly. âThey will never forget the price you exacted.â
âWell, that sounds lovely,â she murmured, stepping into the cave. The idea that sheâd been someone before wasnât terrible. Maybe that person had been better than the woman sheâd become in this life.
âEnoch, since Iâm probably going to die in a few minutes, would you mind answering a few questions?â She moved forward at a slow walk, eyeing the shadows in the cave, just in case.
A faint whisk-whisk sounded in the distance, like a thousand blades being sharpened. As Nara made it further up the tunnel the glinting began to match the whisk-ing, but it wasnât until she reached the entrance to a massive cavern that she put it all together.
As in her dream, platforms moved through the cavern at seemingly random intervals, hundreds of them.
